Position Description:
The resident/fellow will participate in urgent and scheduled surgeries with a senior surgeon, with potential progression toward autonomy.

Kaplan Hand institute is a private, orthopaedic based, Hand Surgery center composed by Dr. Marc Garcia-Elias, Dr. Angel Ferreres, Dr. Alex Lluch, Dr. Ana Carreño and Dr.Mireia Esplugas.
We offer the possibility to assist to the OR and to be part of the outpatient clinic. Spanish language knowledge is highly recommended although it is not mandatory.

The Plastic Surgery Department at St Thomas? have five Plastics Hand Surgery Consultants performing a wide range of hand and wrist procedures for elective and trauma patients. The workload will involve assessing and managing hand trauma in our Hand Trauma Unit and Day Surgery Unit. There will be equal exposure to elective work which includes, for example, treatment for nerve compression syndromes, Dupuytren?s disease, post-trauma reconstruction, arthroplasty, wrist arthroscopy, open wrist surgery and Epidermolysis Bullosa. EMOT is a private hand and microsurgery hospital and has been founded in 1991. Eleven hand surgeons often deal with upper extremity trauma and elective surgical cases. Microsurgical operations have being performed on 7/24 basis. Candidates for the fellowships funded by the centre need to have good knowledge of the Dutch language. Our center has 6 senior specialist orthopaedic hand and upper extremity surgeons.
5000 cases are operated every year (30% trauma cases). Residents will also be exposed to elective cases of hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder and brachial plexus surgery, both open and endoscopic procedures.
Residents assist senior surgeons in the OR and one resident must be on call every day.
Journal club and clinical staff meetings are organized once a week.
The financial support for the residents is 1219 ?/ month, social care included. |

Our Unit is integrated in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (head : Pr F Schuind). We have an important activity of adult traumatology, including brachial plexus cases, shoulder, elbow and complex wrist and hand problems. We are in charge also of many degenerative conditions. Although our hospital is mainly adult, we operate obstetrical brachial plexus cases and congenital differences. We welcome self-funded fellows, and also occasionally European fellows which we then fund as normal Belgian assistants. These fellows may operate under supervision, dispose of their outpatient clinic (in addition to following the seniors\'s outpatient clinics) and take calls. Fellows are in charge of research projects, and may follow the interuniversity basic course in hand surgery. |
